The two students were killed in a two-vehicle collision on the Bustamante Highway about 8 a.m. The students, a boy and a girl, attended Lennon High School in the parish. It's reported that Transport Authority personnel were allegedly chasing the driver of a Subaru Impreza motorcar which was transporting students from May Pen to Lennon in Mocho, when the driver lost control of the vehicle and crashed head-on into a Toyota Probox motor vehicle which was also transporting students. The deceased were passengers in the Subaru. Radio Jamaica News was informed that the driver of the Subaru, who fled the scene, was later captured at Norman Manley International Airport trying to leave the country. This was disclosed by Deputy Superintendent Owen Brown, Territorial Officer for the Clarendon Police Division, who said the driver was now in custody at May Pen police station where he could soon be charged with causing death by dangerous driving. Three injured students remain hospitalised, one of them said to be in critical condition. The driver of the Probox is also receiving treatment. Rural school bus programme Transport Minister Daryl Vaz, while expressing condolences to the families of the crash victims, said authorities are working to ensure those responsible for the fatal traffic crash are held to account. He also said the government is committed to strengthening the rural school bus programme to ensure students have access to safe, dependable transportation and to minimise the number of children travelling in vehicles being operated by rogue drivers. A proposal for the operations of the rural school bus programme has been completed and will be presented to Cabinet. "I will be bringing to Cabinet on Monday a presentation for the proposed school bus transport system for students. On Monday I get further directives from Cabinet, at which point I will make public what the next steps are. But it remains a very, very serious priority for me as every day that it's not implemented the lives are at risk based on the transport methods," said Mr. Vaz. The Minister said the Transport Authority is to provide a report on Monday's incident. He further noted that the authority has a 'no chasing' and 'no blocking' policy which is applicable to all motorists. We are calling for a comprehensive review of enforcement practices of the Transport Authority to prioritise the safety of all road users. The judge ruling over Elon Musk’s ~$55 billion CEO pay package, which some Tesla shareholders claimed was obtained without following proper governance rules, has decided to reject Tesla’s attempt to reinstate it with a shareholder vote. Delaware Supreme Court could be next. In 2018, Tesla shareholders voted for Elon Musk to get a historic new CEO compensation package that could be worth $55 billion for the executive if Tesla achieved remarkable growth in valuation and profits, which it did. However, some shareholders argued that Musk unfairly secured this extremely generous compensation plan by misleading shareholders about the fact that the plan was being put together by an independent board and negotiated in good faith. They filed a complaint in court in Delaware. The case went to trial in 2022, but it took a long time for the judge to give her decision. Earlier this year, Delaware Chancery Court Chief Judge Kathleen St. J. McCormick sided with the shareholders after testimonies from everyone involved in the pay package negotiations, or lack of negotiations, and a thorough investigation of how it came about. She determined that Musk was in control of the board during the time it granted him the pay package while the board members who approved the package were also granted historically large compensations, which they ended up partly reimbursing as part of . McCormick found many governance irregularities, including the fact that the board members who supposedly negotiated the package were not independent of Musk, and even his personal lead on the compensation was his own divorce lawyer, who he had recently hired to be general counsel at Tesla. The judge rescinded the compensation package, which included over $50 billion worth of Tesla stock options that the CEO had yet to exercise. She asked Tesla to go back to the drawing board, renegotiate the pay package in good faith, and present it properly to shareholders. Instead, Tesla disagreed with the judge’s findings around governance issues and decided to present the same package while including the judge’s decision in the updated proposal and having Tesla’s shareholders vote on it again. In June, Tesla shareholders voted to reapprove the package, albeit at a lower percentage than the original vote. Tesla’s legal team believed the vote would “ratify” the compensation package and force the judge to vacate her decision to void the pay package. However, both Tesla’s lawyers and most corporate law scholars agreed that this would require a completely new way to address ratification. McCormick listened to both sides this August, and we were awaiting her decision by the end of the year. Today, the judge released her decision and she sided against Tesla’s argument again: “The large and talented group of defense firms got creative with the ratification argument, but their unprecedented theories go against multiple strains of settled law.” Beyond the ratification problem, the judge also said that she believes Tesla again misrepresented the situation to shareholders in the statements made around the new vote: “Even if a stockholder vote could have a ratifying effect, it could not do so here due to multiple, material misstatements in the proxy statement.” On top of her ruling on the compensation, she also ruled against the lawyers for the shareholders, who were asking for a ridiculous $5 billion in Tesla stock as their legal fee. Considering Robert Griffin III and Andrew Luck headlined the NFL Draft that year, it was not believed that Wilson would be a starter come Week 1, but that quickly changed. Going into the 2012 NFL Draft, Tarvaris Jackson was the Seattle Seahawks' starting quarterback, and the team signed NFL veteran quarterback Matt Flynn as an insurance policy on the injury-prone Jackson . It was assumed in the short term that either Jackson or Flynn would lead the franchise. Once training camp arrived, however, the Seahawks' quarterback position was uncertain. Jackson was traded to the Buffalo Bills, and Flynn was underwhelming at camp, forcing Head Coach Pete Carroll to take a gamble on his rookie quarterback, Wilson, in Week 1. Carroll, nor Wilson, ever looked back. Wilson was one of the best passing quarterbacks that season. He led the Seahawks to an 11-5 record and went on to win NFL Rookie of the Year. #4. Running the ball was the name of the game. The quarterback would either run the football himself at the line of scrimmage or hand it off to the running back, and the offensive linemen would claw and push the pile forward as the runner powered his legs. It was not a pretty sight. However, Marino took a different approach, throwing the ball with a unique quick release for that era. He led the Dolphins to a 9-1 record after replacing David Woodley midway through his rookie season, ending with a 12-4 record. He went on to win Rookie of the Year and was the first rookie to start a Pro Bowl. #3. C.J. Stroud was drafted No. 2 by the Houston Texans last year, there were a lot of questions, not about his ability, but about the organization that he would be playing for. The Texans were coming off of a 3-13-1 season in 2022, finishing with the worst record in the league, and a lot of volatility in its front office. The team fired its head coach and a top executive before the draft. Weeks later, the team hired former Texans linebacker DeMeco Ryans as its next head coach. While Ryans is a defensive-minded coach, Stroud was seen as a key ingredient to the team's success since Ryans hired his coaching staff around the quarterback. Stroud led the NFL in yards and TD-to-interception ratio during his rookie season, which is an efficiency statistic considering he didn't get his first interception until his sixth regular-season game against the New Orleans Saints. While Stroud was a part of the league MVP conversation for most of the season, he didn't ultimately win the title. However, he was named 2023 NFL Offensive Rookie of the Year, and his rookie season is seen as one of the best in NFL history. #2. Robert Griffin III (2012) - Adjusted net yards per pass attempt: 7.47 - Passer rating: 102.4 - Season stats: 3,200 yards, 20 touchdowns, 5 interceptions Leading into the 2012 draft, it wasn't a matter of whether Washington would pick a quarterback, it was a matter of who. After several seasons of mediocre quarterback play and losing seasons from the likes of Jason Campbell, Donovan McNabb, and Rex Grossman, it was time for a new face to lead the offense. At No. 2, Washington selected Robert Griffin III making him the second quarterback selected in the 2012 NFL draft behind Andrew Luck. Griffin started his rookie year campaign with one of the best performances football fans have ever seen. It requires companies responsible for substantial greenhouse gas emissions to pay into a state infrastructure fund for repairs or projects that help avoid future damage from climate change. Lawmakers approved the bill earlier this year. It's meant to make big oil and gas companies contribute to the cost of repairs after extreme weather events or for resiliency projects. Such projects may include restoring coastal wetlands or upgrading roads, bridges and water drainage systems. Legal challenges to the new law are expected.
