As of Nov. 18, a total of 294 dairies in California were under quarantine due to the avian flu, state agriculture officials confirmed. More than 4 million turkeys and chickens have been killed at poultry ranches across the state in an attempt to stop the virus from spreading. Meanwhile, the bird flu virus was detected in a batch of raw milk from Raw Farm in Fresno County, the California Department of Public Health reported. The Fresno Bee talked to María Soledad, a food safety inspection service spokeswoman at the U.S. Department of Agriculture, to learn more about the virus and how it affects food safety. According to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, highly pathogenic avian influenza — also known as bird flu or H5N1 — is a highly contagious and often deadly disease primarily found in poultry. It is “caused by highly pathogenic avian influenza A (H5) and A (H7) viruses,” the agency said on its website. HPAI can spread from wild birds to domestic poultry and other animals. The virus can also infect humans in rare cases. “It is important to note that ‘highly pathogenic’ refers to severe impact in birds, not necessarily in humans,” the agency said. Unlike seasonal influenza viruses, which are typically contracted through human-to-human transmission, avian influenza viruses are spread by infected birds through saliva, mucus and feces, according to the CDC. The virus can also be present in the respiratory secretions, organs, blood, or body fluids of other infected animals — including milk. Human infections occur when the virus enters the eyes, nose or mouth, or is inhaled through airborne droplets, aerosol particles or dust. It can also be transmitted by touching contaminated surfaces and then touching the face. “Illness in humans from avian influenza virus infections have ranged in severity from no symptoms or mild illness to severe disease that resulted in death,” the CDC said. “Consumers can safely enjoy turkey this holiday season,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration wrote in an email to The Bee, noting that food safety inspectors examine turkeys for disease “before and after slaughter.” That includes your Thanksgiving bird. “The turkeys from farms with confirmed avian influenza don’t even get sent to slaughter,” Soledad said. “They are destroyed on premises.” During an avian flu outbreak, “The chance of infected poultry or eggs entering the food chain is low,” the FDA said on its website in April, “because of the rapid onset of symptoms in poultry as well as the safeguards in place, which include testing of flocks and federal inspection programs.” “When food is properly prepared and stored, the risk of consumers becoming infected with HPAI is reduced even further,” the FDA said. UC Davis professor Linda J. Harris, who focuses on microbial food safety, says you should prepare your Thanksgiving turkey using four essential steps: clean, cook, chill and separate. On its Thanksgiving food safety website , the USDA has videos and information including calculators that help you determine the appropriate amount of time to thaw and cook your turkey. “Simply select your turkey’s weight, along with your preferred thawing and cooking methods, and you’ll immediately receive guidance on how to safely prepare your turkey this Thanksgiving!’ USDA congressional public affairs specialist Maria Machuca wrote in an email to The Bee. “There is no evidence that the virus can be transmitted to humans through properly prepared food,” the U.S. Food and Drug Administration said on its website. Pasteurized milk and other dairy products are safe to consume and cook with, according to Hebah Ghanem, infectious disease specialist at University of California San Francisco, Fresno. “The most important thing that it has to be pasteurized, because the virus is killed with heat,” Ghanem told The Bee. “Pasteurization of milk was adopted decades ago as a basic public health measure to kill dangerous bacteria and largely eliminate the risk of getting sick,” the FDA said on its website. All egg products are pasteurized as required by the U.S. Department of Agriculture. “This means that they have been rapidly heated and held at a minimum required temperature for a specified time to destroy bacteria,” the agency said. However, eggs that are still in their shells aren’t required to be pasteurized, leading to potential health risks if eaten raw or uncooked. According to the CDC, avian flu symptoms in humans may include: California dairy workers infected with avian flu have experienced mild flu-like symptoms, The Bee previously reported. “All the cases that we have here in California are very mild,” Ghanem told the Fresno Bee in October. “They haven’t needed hospitalization.” To prevent the spread of highly pathogenic avian influenza, people should avoid exposure to dead animals, Ghanem said in October. Meta anticipates its Louisiana data center will create 500 operational jobs and 5,000 temporary construction jobs, said Kevin Janda, director of data center strategy. At 4 million square feet (370,000 square meters), it will be the company’s largest AI data center to date, he added. “We want to make sure we are having a positive impact on the local level,” Janda said. Congressional leaders and local representatives from across the political spectrum heralded the Meta facility as a boon for Richland parish, a rural part of Louisiana with a population of 20,000 historically reliant on agriculture. About one in four residents are considered to live in poverty and the parish has an employment rate below 50%, according to the U.S. census data. Meta plans to invest $200 million into road and water infrastructure improvements for the parish to offset its water usage. The facility is expected to be completed in 2030. Entergy, one of the nation’s largest utilities providers, is fast-tracking plans to build three natural gas power plants in Louisiana capable of generating 2,262 megawatts for Meta’s data center over a 15 year period — nearly one-tenth of Entergy’s existing energy capacity across four states. The Louisiana Public Service Commission is weighing Entergy’s proposal as some environmental groups have opposed locking the state into more fossil fuel-based energy infrastructure. Meta said it plans to help bring 1,500 megawatts of renewable energy onto the grid in the future. Louisiana residents may ultimately end up with rate increases to pay off the cost of operating these natural gas power plants when Meta’s contract with Entergy expires, said Jessica Hendricks, state policy director for the Alliance for Affordable Energy, a Louisiana-based nonprofit advocating for energy consumers. “There’s no reason why residential customers in Louisiana need to pay for a power plant for energy that they’re not going to use,” Hendricks said. “And we want to make sure that there’s safeguards in place.” Public service commissioner Foster Campbell, who represents northeast Louisiana, said he does not believe the data center will increase rates for Louisianians and views it as vital for his region. “It’s going in one of the most needed places in Louisiana and maybe one of the most needed places in the United States of America,” Foster said. “I’m for it 100%.” Environmental groups have also warned of the pollution generated from Musk’s AI data center in Memphis. Without Moss there to capitalize on opponents shying away from star cornerback Patrick Surtain II, the Broncos (9-6) have had to largely abandon their preferred man coverage in favor of zone strategies and the results haven't been pretty. They allowed 32 points to the Cleveland Browns when former teammate Jerry Jeudy caught nine passes for a career-best 235 yards, including a 70-yard touchdown. Only Jonathan Taylor's fumble at the goal line as he was about to score a 41-yard touchdown and give Indianapolis a 20-3 lead saved the Broncos in Week 15 and allowed Denver to seize momentum and get the victory. They couldn't stop Justin Herbert , who led the Los Angeles Chargers back from a double-digit third-quarter deficit for a 34-27 win last week that prevented the Broncos from ending their eight-year playoff drought. It also put more pressure on the Broncos to win Saturday at Cincinnati, where the Bengals (7-8) cling to hopes of catching the Broncos and deny Denver a wild-card berth. Late in the second quarter, Rodgers was sacked by defensive end AJ Epenesa, resulting in a safety. This was quickly followed by a 39-yard field goal from kicker Tyler Bass, giving the Bills a 12-0 lead at halftime. Amari Cooper, James Cook and Keon Coleman all found the end zone in the third quarter for the Bills, pushing their lead to 33-0 entering the fourth. Josh Allen sat out the fourth quarter, replaced by Mitchell Trubisky, who connected on a 69-yard pass to Tyrell Shavers for the Bills' final score of the game. Tyrod Taylor also stepped in for Rodgers, connecting on the Jets' first score of the game with just under seven minutes left in the fourth, followed shortly by a 20-yard pass to Tyler Conklin. With another loss in the books, the Jets will look to secure a win in their final game of the season against the Miami Dolphins.

A mayor believes the Queensland government's decision to remove him sets a dangerous precedent for councils after he was accused of misleading voters about his army service. Login or signup to continue reading Townsville Mayor Troy Thompson was stood down for 12 months on full pay of $225,206 by the newly minted Local Government Minister Ann Leahy after ongoing controversy at the north Queensland council. He is unable to perform any of the duties of a councillor or mayor during this time. Mr Thompson said he was disappointed in the decision and rejected the allegations of corruption levelled against him, vowing to continue fighting to clear his name, "This has set a precedent for councillors across Queensland, that the state government may suspend a democratically elected member without a proper judicial process taking place," he said in a statement on Facebook on Friday. "Once the 12-month suspension is completed and I am cleared of all allegations, I look forward to returning to the role of mayor, as democratically elected by the people of Townsville." He promised to study "local laws, the act, meeting procedures and policies" during his suspension. Mr Thompson is being investigated by the state's corruption watchdog over matters including claims during his 2024 mayoral campaign that he served five years in the army. He later conceded on Nine Network's A Current Affair that he had misled voters about his military record, blaming "100-plus" concussions. It sparked a unanimous no-confidence council vote in Townsville, the country's biggest garrison city boasting more than 15,000 Australian Defence Force personnel. Mr Thompson has since resisted calls to stand down amid ongoing issues with colleagues. The state's former Labor government issued a show cause notice in one of its final acts before going into caretaker mode ahead of the state election. Opposition Leader Steven Miles said he was "glad sanity prevailed" and the LNP government agreed to stand down the embattled mayor. "Townsville is just too important to Queensland for its council to go on paralysed," he said in a statement. "That's why we started the show cause process and loaded the gun ready for the LNP to finally pull the trigger on Troy Thompson." Following President-elect Donald Trump announcing his desire for US "control" of Greenland , the Danish government ramped up its defense spending for the Arctic island. Ahead of his inauguration for a second term at the White House and as part of his Cabinet nominations, Trump named Ken Howery, a former envoy to Sweden, as his ambassador to Copenhagen, before talking about the status of Greenland. The new defense package was a "double-digit billion amount" in krone which is tantamount to at least $1.5 billion, said Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen. On his Truth Social account, Trump said that Greenland, which has been a semi-autonomous part of Denmark for over six centuries, could host a massive US Air Force base. "For purposes of National Security and Freedom throughout the World, the United States of America feels that the ownership and control of Greenland is an absolute necessity," he said. Following Trump's announcement, Greenland's elected Prime Minister Mute Egede released a statement where he said, "Greenland is ours. We are not for sale and will never be for sale. We must not lose our long struggle for freedom." According to Poulsen, the new package will help purchase two new inspection ships, two new long-range drones, and two extra dog sled teams for increased security. It will also allow enhanced staffing at Arctic Command in the capital Nuuk as well as upgrade one of Greenland's three primary civilian airports to handle F-35 supersonic fighter aircraft. "We have not invested enough in the Arctic for many years, now we are planning a stronger presence," he shared. While he did not reveal the exact figure, Danish media estimated the budget to be around 12-15 billion krone. With its Pituffik air base, Greenland's location is strategic for the US military and its early-warning system for ballistic missiles since the island lies in the shortest route from North America to Europe. Greenland has a population of 56,000 people. Since 2009, they have retained the right to declare independence from Denmark. However, they have refrained from doing so as they are significantly dependent on budget transfers from Copenhagen for sustenance. During his first term, Trump had expressed interest in purchasing the island from Denmark, a proposal that was vehemently refused by both Greenland and Denmark. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen had called Trump's offer "absurd" at the time.

The chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Lagos State, Hon. Cornelius Ojelabi, on Sunday, said the forthcoming Local Government elections will hold across the 20 Local Government Areas and 37 LCDAs in the state. According to him, the impacts and contributions of the LCDAs cannot be discounted in the political and socio-economic development of the state. Ojelabi, who made this known in a statement, disclosed that the Local Council Development Areas have not only been the closest to the grassroots but have also brought the desired developments across the state. With this move, the leadership of the party contradicts the earlier position of the Lagos State House of Assembly, which held that local government elections will not be conducted in the state’s 37 Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) in 2025. The decision of the party also dishonours a recent Supreme Court judgement, which granted financial and administrative autonomy to the state’s 20 constitutionally recognised Local Government Areas (LGAs). Setting the record straight, he said, “We wish to inform all and sundry that the Local Government elections will hold across the state in the 20 Local Government Councils and the 37 Local Council Development Areas in the year 2025. Our landscape is dotted with several infrastructural projects by the LCDAs, which include road, drainage and market construction, school and housing projects, primary education and health facilities, and various social service interventions, etc. The various collaborative efforts with the state government on refuse disposal, drain clearing and security are also pointers to their continuous relevance. We hope this release will put paid to further speculations as regards the local government elections in order not to unnecessarily heat up the polity.”
