NEW YORK (AP) — Daniel Penny chose not to testify and defense lawyers rested their case Friday at his trial in the death of an agitated man he choked on a subway train. Closing arguments are expected after Thanksgiving in the closely watched manslaughter case about the death of Jordan Neely , 30. The encounter between Penny, a white Marine veteran, and Neely, a homeless Black man with mental health and drug problems, has been drawn into U.S. political divides over race, public safety and cities’ ability to handle mental illness and social ills. Penny, 26, has pleaded not guilty. Many criminal defendants don't take the stand, and juries are routinely instructed that they cannot hold defendants' silence — a constitutional right — against them. One of Penny’s lawyers, Daniel Kenniff, noted after court that jurors did hear from Penny, in the form of his recorded statements to police minutes and hours after he put Neely in a chokehold. “Virtually everything he said then is consistent with credible testimony of his fellow passengers," Kenniff said. Penny told police that he wrapped his arm around Neely's neck, took him to the floor and “put him out” because he was angrily throwing things and making threatening comments. Penny said on police video that he hadn't wanted to injure Neely but rather to keep him from hurting anyone else. A number of other passengers testified that they were scared of Neely and relieved that Penny grabbed hold of him. A man who later stepped in and held down Neely's arms, however, told jurors that he urged Penny to let go but that the veteran kept choking Neely for a time. Prosecutors say Penny meant to protect people but recklessly used too much force, overlooking Neely's humanity and making no effort to spare his life. City medical examiners ruled that the chokehold killed Neely. A pathologist hired by Penny's defense disputed that finding . Prosecutors, defense lawyers and the judge are set to meet Monday to hash out jury instructions.

It’s a move the prairie director of the Retail Council of Canada says comes with pros and cons. John Graham told 680 CJOB’s Connecting Winnipeg he’s hopeful the announcement does what it’s intended to do. The feds say the initiative would start in mid-December and last for about two months. “There’s a fair bit of time required to make sure you’re accurately removing or adding GST, and it is a short window — a couple of months,” Graham said. “The upside is that it may put more money in people’s pockets, and some of that’s going to land in retail stores and restaurants.” Graham said he wishes the announcement had been made earlier in the year, as it would have benefited more people ahead of the holiday season. “The majority of Manitobans, about two-thirds, are going to shop this month for their holiday shopping, because Black Friday sales are increasingly the best deals of the year,” he said. “So, a lot of retailers are aggressively competing to get your business now, and not two weeks before Christmas. “It’s good for some of the items — like snack foods, beer, wine, pop, food platters — all of that stuff is certainly closer to Dec. 25.” A political scientist at the University of Manitoba, however, says he’s not a fan of the decision. “I suppose, to be charitable, you could look at this as a quick win — so to speak — for the government,” Malcolm Bird told 680 CJOB, “to help embattled citizens with some immediate and tangible revenue and relief. “But these things are largely done for political benefit rather than as an effective policy means.” And even then, Bird said, the policy has only limited value on the political stage.

https://arab.news/c67az Jakarta: Indonesia’s new leader, President Prabowo Subianto, is seeking closer cooperation with the UAE on Jakarta’s industrialization efforts as he made his first official trip to Abu Dhabi since taking office last month. Indonesia’s relations with the UAE grew under former President Joko Widodo, who in 2021 secured a more than $46 billion investment commitment from the Gulf state. The two countries signed a free trade deal a year later, which came into force last September. The UAE was Prabowo’s last stop in his first foreign trip since becoming Indonesia’s new leader in October. “Now that I have earned the trust from my people to lead Indonesia, I want to continue our good relations,” Prabowo told UAE President Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed Al-Nahyan during their first official meeting in Abu Dhabi on Saturday. Jakarta’s priorities are focused on defense, food security and energy security, he said, adding that the government also wants to implement a downstream policy that includes domestic processing of raw materials. “This means we want to perform a massive industrialization,” Prabowo said. “In this context, we see that the UAE and Indonesia have similar priorities. We can work together across different sectors and we want to invite the UAE to actively participate in our economy.” The two leaders also presided over the signing of several agreements as part of their meeting, covering areas such as technology, renewable energy, infrastructure and health. “They agreed to increase trade between the two countries, specifically by optimizing the utilization of Indonesia-UAE CEPA,” Indonesian foreign ministry spokesperson Roy Soemirat told Arab News on Sunday. “President Prabowo welcomed the UAE president’s invitation to strengthen cooperation in infrastructure and collaboration in international forums to resolve global issues, including peaceful conflict resolution.” Prabowo’s visit to Abu Dhabi was his second this year, following a trip in May as president-elect. He was concluding his first overseas trip as president, which also included stops in China, the US, and the UK.

Adam McKay is applauding just how “radical” Jon M. Chu’s musical adaptation “ Wicked ” is. The director tweeted that “Wicked,” which is only one half of Chu’s two-part vision, is one of the biggest swings in Hollywood . McKay explained that “Wicked” is “nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, [and] propaganda,” which feels especially poignant in America today. “On a pure storytelling level, ‘Wicked Part 1’ is right up there as one of the most radical big studio Hollywood movies ever made,” McKay wrote. “I know ‘Part 2’ swings back to the center a bit but ‘Part 1’ is nakedly about radicalization in the face of careerism, fascism, [and] propaganda.” He continued, “What’s really striking about ‘Wicked Part 1’ is that it’s coming out NOW when America has never been more right wing and propagandized . And yes, I know the theatrical production and the book are much older so part of the timing is a coincidence but still...I think you’ll be shocked. If America keeps going on the track it is I wouldn’t be surprised to see the movie banned in 3 to 5 years.” McKay added that the film is “VERY radical” and that co-lead star Ariana Grande is an “incredible” actress. “It’s as good a performance as you’ll find in any genre,” he wrote. However, McKay clarified that this wasn’t his review of the film but rather an observation about its timeliness. “And because it’s Twitter the ‘always be reviewing everything all the time’ crowd immediately goes to ‘Wow. You really liked “Wicked” THAT much?’ I’m not reviewing the movie. I’m talking about the story and POV as a commercial worldwide film,” he wrote. “I’m just talking about the story and POV. It’s still a Hollywood musical so don’t expect the Baeder Meinhoff Complex.” McKay cited “Bridge on the River Kwai,” “The Sound of Music,” “The Searchers,” and “Citizen Kane” among other examples of “radical big studio Hollywood movies” that made political statements like “Wicked.” “I don’t think of ‘The Best Years of Our Lives,’ ‘Network,’ ‘Dr. Strangelove,’ ‘Serpico,’ etc. as ‘big studio movies,'” McKay added. “This is off the top of my head so I’m sure I’m forgetting a half dozen other ‘radical’ big Hollywood movies. ‘It’s a Wonderful Life’ is a famous one but I don’t think it did well at the box office. ‘Hunger Games.’ That’s a big one. It’s incredibly left wing. [...] I remember some people being snooty about ‘Avatar’ and I was like are you kidding me?” “Wicked” is now in theaters with “Part Two” set for a 2025 release.By FARNOUSH AMIRI, Associated Press WASHINGTON (AP) — Former Rep. Matt Gaetz said Friday that he will not be returning to Congress after withdrawing his name from consideration to be attorney general under President-elect Donald Trump amid growing allegations of sexual misconduct. “I’m still going to be in the fight, but it’s going to be from a new perch. I do not intend to join the 119th Congress,” Gaetz told conservative commentator Charlie Kirk, adding that he has “some other goals in life that I’m eager to pursue with my wife and my family.” Related Articles The announcement comes a day after Gaetz, a Florida Republican, stepped aside from the Cabinet nomination process amid growing fallout from federal and House Ethics investigations that cast doubt on his ability to be confirmed as the nation’s chief federal law enforcement officer. The 42-year-old has vehemently denied the allegations against him. Gaetz’s nomination as attorney general had stunned many career lawyers inside the Justice Department, but reflected Trump’s desire to place a loyalist in a department he has marked for retribution following the criminal cases against him. Hours after Gaetz withdrew, Trump nominated Pam Bondi, the former Florida attorney general, who would come to the job with years of legal work under her belt and that other trait Trump prizes above all: loyalty. It’s unclear what’s next for Gaetz, who is no longer a member of the House. He surprised colleagues by resigning from Congress the same day that Trump nominated him for attorney general. Some speculated he could still be sworn into office for another two-year term on Jan. 3, given that he had just won reelection earlier this month. But Gaetz, who has been in state and national politics for 14 years, said he’s done with Congress. “I think that eight years is probably enough time in the United States Congress,” he said.

Cha-il's prickly attitude doesn't soften much despite the good example set by naive rookie auditor Han-soo (Lee Jung-ha). Nevertheless, Shin steals most of his scenes, playing his role with a winning combination of deductive reasoning and righteous indignation. Cha-il may not be a people person, but Shin makes him one of the most entertaining new lead characters in a K-drama this year. 'Chicken Nugget' on Netflix Two hapless office workers struggle with an absurd metaphysical dilemma in this bizarre science fiction comedy that asks the question: What would you do if a loved one wandered into a mysterious cabinet and transformed into a chicken nugget? Based on the gonzo web cartoon series of the same name, "Chicken Nugget" chases after distressed small-business owner Seon-man (Ryu Seung-ryong) and his happy-go-lucky intern, Baek-joong (Ahn Jae-hong), as they try to restore Seon-man's daughter, Min-ah (Kim You-jung), to her human form. The show's tone frequently changes to match the runaway plot, whose digressive subplots involve time travel, a mad scientist and his jealous nephew, and Baek-joong's food critic ex-girlfriend (played by celebrity fashion model Jung Ho-yeon). Come for the unpredictable mystery, stay for the surreal humor. 'Chief Detective 1958' on Hulu Lee Je-hoon turns heads as Yeong-han, a small-town detective who takes on big-city corruption in this breezy period cop drama. "Chief Detective 1958" serves as a prequel to the popular series "Chief Detective" (1971-89) but you don't have to be familiar with that earlier program to enjoy watching Yeong-han and his team of virtuous misfits take on powerful local gangsters and crooked cops. Lee pours on the charm, and his energetic performance makes you want to root for Yeong-han, a naive hero who might have otherwise come across like an unbearably shticky do-gooder. His co-stars also excel in their supporting roles, especially Lee Dong-hwi as the stubborn Mad Dog and Choi Deok-moon as Yeong-han's venerable mentor, Dae-cheon. 'Miss Night and Day' on Netflix Part body swap romantic-comedy and part serial killer mystery, "Miss Night and Day" pairs Mi-jin (Jeong Eun-ji), a skilled but unemployed 20-something, with Ji-ung (Choi Jin-hyuk), a standoffish district attorney who has no clue that Mi-jin is also Lim-sun (Lee Jung-eun), a 40-something employee at his office. Mi-jin transforms into Lim-sun during the day and then back into her own body at night after she runs into a stray cat that used to belong to Mi-jin's aunt. Ji-ung happens to be investigating the disappearance of Mi-jin's aunt, along with that of a handful of other middle-aged women. Ji-ung's search doesn't land anywhere memorable, but the show is otherwise irresistible. 'No Gain No Love' on Amazon A marriage of convenience unites insecure businessperson Hae-yeong (Shin Min-a) with underachieving convenience store clerk Ji-uk (Kim Young-dae) after Hae-yeong's office job offers a promotion exclusively to married couples. Unfortunately for Hae-yeong, her job is run by the parents of her boorish ex, Gyu-hyun (Lee Sang-yi), who makes life difficult for Hae-yeong as he climbs the corporate ladder and also dates Hae-yeong's roommate, popular romance novelist Ja-yeon (Han Ji-hyun). Some K-drama fans don't like how much Gyu-hyun remains in the picture, but his relationship with Ja-yeon provides a sweet compliment to Ji-uk and Hae-yeong's conventional but satisfying romance. The show's genre-savvy but unique plot carries Hae-yeong's crowd-pleasing story through its sudsiest twists. FAQs Q1. Where can we watch 'Squid Game' season 2? A1.
