BARCELONA, Spain, Nov. 22 (Xinhua) -- Spain's solar power is on track to overtake wind power as the leading source in the country's expanding renewable energy sector, which now accounts for more than half of the total energy mix, industry insiders told Xinhua on Friday. Renewable energy sources have supplied 57.5 percent of Spain's electricity production this year, according to the association of renewable energy companies. Wind power remains the largest contributor with 22.4 percent, followed by photovoltaic solar energy at 18.3 percent. Red Electrica de Espana (REE), the national grid operator, reported that large photovoltaic plants will soon surpass wind farms as the energy source with the highest installed capacity in Spain. Ground-based photovoltaic installations, excluding self-consumption systems on rooftops of homes and businesses, now have a combined capacity of over 29,600 megawatts -- nearly double the 15,300 megawatts recorded in 2021, according to REE. Alvaro Luna, a renewable energy expert at the Polytechnic University of Catalonia (UPC), described Spain's solar power capacity as "healthy," citing the country's strong resource availability and growing production. "Spain is among the European Union countries doing their homework in terms of renewable energy penetration and the energy mix," Luna said in an interview with Xinhua. However, Luna emphasized the need to address gaps in energy sharing, noting that not all households and businesses have access to rooftops for solar panel installations. He also called for greater innovation in solar technology, describing it as a "European problem." "Photovoltaic energy has immense potential as the alternative energy source Europe needs, but we're not fully utilizing the technology," he said. Luna stressed the importance of developing energy storage solutions to store surplus energy for later use, as solar energy production is concentrated during specific parts of the day. He also highlighted the need for diversification of renewable energy sources to improve system flexibility, citing solar thermal energy -- using the sun's heat -- as a promising area for future investment.
— A gun attack at a makeshift bar in Hillside, Knockpatrick, Manchester, on Friday night left one man dead and another injured. The deceased has been identified as 38-year-old Ricardo Williams, also known as ‘Ricky,’ a resident of Hillside. The shooting occurred shortly after 9:00 p.m. when Williams and another man were at the bar. Gunmen opened fire on the two men, both of whom were rushed to the hospital. Williams was pronounced dead, while the other man was admitted for treatment, his condition remaining unknown. The attack comes just over two months after Williams’ brothers, Sanjay and Andre Williams, were charged in connection with the murder of 46-year-old Kevin Brown, also known as ‘Trees,’ on Green Street in Knockpatrick. Local residents have expressed concerns over the rising violence in the area, which has disrupted the social atmosphere and nightlife in Knockpatrick and neighboring communities. One resident, who asked to remain anonymous, noted that the ongoing violence is negatively affecting the livelihood of law-abiding citizens and their ability to go out freely. “This violence is affecting everyone, especially those who are just trying to live their lives and work hard,” the resident said, calling on the police to intensify efforts to target the criminals behind these acts of violence. This incident marks the second murder in the parish within a week. Last Friday, Holmwood Technical High School bus driver Rohan Gentles was also shot dead on the school compound in northeast Manchester. Since the start of the year, the parish has recorded 46 murders, contributing to the ongoing concerns about crime in the region. The police have not yet made any arrests in connection with Friday night’s shooting, and the investigation is ongoing. Showcase your business with a personalized page on McKoy’s News. Secret Service acting Director Ronald Rowe and Rep. Pat Fallon (R-Texas) got into a yelling match Thursday during a congressional hearing about the July assassination attempt on President-elect Donald Trump . When Fallon began asking Rowe — who was the Secret Service’s deputy director when Trump was shot July 13 in Butler, Pennsylvania — questions about security failures that day, the two men remained relatively calm. Holy shit -- acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe and Rep. Pat Fallon just had a huge, angry blow up during a hearing, screaming and yelling at each other pic.twitter.com/LQdvHGnEGM The exchange became heated when Fallon presented a photo of Rowe at the 9/11 remembrance in New York earlier this year and asked him if he was the special agent in charge of the president’s protective detail that day. Rowe told Fallon that the special agent in charge in September was not in the photo. His voice rising, he said he “actually responded to Ground Zero” on Sept. 11, 2001 and “was there going through the ashes of the World Trade Center.” He was at the 2024 remembrance, he said, to “show respect for our Secret Service members that died on 9/11.” Fallon yelled at Rowe, “I’m not asking you that. I’m asking you if you were the special agent in charge.” “Do not invoke 9/11 for political purposes,” Rowe shouted back. “Don’t try bullying me,” Fallon said, pointing his finger at Rowe as the two men began talking over each other. “I am elected member of Congress,” he said, “and I am asking you a serious question. ... Were you the special agent in charge that day?” Rowe said he wasn’t. “You know why you were there,” Fallon said. “Because you wanted to be visible because you were auditioning for this job.” Fallon said Rowe should have been on duty during the remembrance and because he wasn’t, he was effectively putting President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris in danger. Fallon’s questioning time was up, but he said to Rowe, “You’re a bully.” Rowe became the interim Secret Service director on July 24, one day after then-Director Kimberly Cheatle stepped down. She had been heavily criticized for her agency’s response to Trump’s assassination attempt. In a comment to HuffPost, Anthony Guglielmi, the Secret Service chief of communications, said that all detail personnel were at the 9/11 memorial ceremony and “had complete access to their protectees during the memorial.” Fallon’s office did not immediately respond to a request for comment. TEHRAN- Ten feature-length documentaries will be competing in the international section of the 18th edition of Iran International Documentary Film Festival Cinéma Vérité, the organizers have announced. “Glass, My Unfulfilled Life” directed by Rogier Kappers from the Netherlands, “Gingerbread for Her Dad” by Alina Mustafina from Kazakhstan and “Return” by Katja Fedulova from the Czech Republic are among the highlights of the lineup, IRNA reported on Saturday. “Glass, My Unfulfilled Life” follows Rogier, a man in his fifties who seemingly has it all: a city apartment, a countryside home, two delightful pre-teens, a bike, and a van. Yet, beneath this facade of contentment, he grapples with a persistent sense of unfulfillment. Determined to pursue his passion, he embarks on a journey to learn the glass harp and realize his dream of becoming a street musician. This documentary comedy explores the unpredictable nature of people’s aspirations, filled with unexpected twists and turns along the way. "Gingerbread for Her Dad" follows three generations of women from a single family as they journey from Kazakhstan to Poland in search of the grave of the man who connects them—a man who lost his life during World War II. Throughout their journey, they mend fractured relationships and confront the lingering traumas of the post-colonial Soviet era. "Return" is about Mumine, a strong woman in her mid-30s whose husband is arrested as a political prisoner. As she cares for their four children, she embodies the struggles of the Muslim Crimean Tatar community, which has faced persecution throughout history. Alongside her is Maye, another resilient woman navigating the harsh realities of life under occupation. While they uphold traditional roles, both women show remarkable dedication to their families and culture. The film highlights their strength and dignity, but also their moments of deep vulnerability as they confront the emotional toll of their circumstances. The festival will also screen “Love Me A Little Bit” directed by Tommaso Cotronei from Italy, “At the Door of the House, Who Will Come Knocking” by Maja Novakovic from Serbia and “Yalla, Baba!” by Angie Obeid from Lebanon. "Love Me A Little Bit" delves into the impact of Western oil multinationals in Nigeria. The film follows Richard, whose life is a constant struggle for survival as he navigates a harsh routine: fetching water, siphoning diesel from pipelines to sell by the roadside, attending school, studying in a dorm, and repeating the cycle. Set against the striking landscape of Bosnia and Herzegovina, “At the Door of the House, Who Will Come Knocking” explores the inner, intangible dimensions of life through a contemplative lens. The film follows an elderly man living in isolation, capturing the poetic rhythms of his daily routines through dreamlike visuals. Surrounded by majestic mountains, a warm burning stove, and the companionship of animals, he finds solace and comfort in his simple existence. "Yalla, Baba!" follows Mansour Obeid, who made the journey from Lebanon to Brussels with friends 42 years ago. Now, his daughter, filmmaker Angie Obeid, invites him to recreate that trip together for the first time. As they travel, they encounter bullet-riddled walls in Bosnia and the haunting remnants of communism, while a now-impermissible route through Syria symbolizes a changed world. Their journey is filled with both serious discussions and lighter moments, enriched by the surprise company of two hitchhiking girls. Documentaries from Iraq, Palestine, Spain and Chile will also be screened in this section of the festival. The 18th edition of Cinéma Vérité, Iran’s major international festival for documentary films, will be held in Tehran from December 8 to 15. The Documentary & Experimental Film Center (DEFC) is the organizer of the event. The festival tries to express the relationship between reality and truth through documentary films. This year’s edition of the festival will have several sections including the national competition, the international competition, the Martyr Avini Award, “Gaza, Palestine, Resistance,” commemoration ceremonies, and other programs on the sideline. "I believe we are making a very big difference in the community,” shared Daiton Sheffield, councillor for Melville Youth Council. “I believe we are educating our fellow youth on what exactly municipal government does and things they can do to join, for example through the Melville Youth Council." The initiative aims to bridge the gap between the city and youth in the community through local projects that focus on recreation and youth, economic development, and technology. "I really enjoy helping our community. I do a lot for our community through our school already,” said Abby Schicker, referring to why she joined. “It just seemed like a great opportunity to let other youth voices be heard and see what changes they wanted to see in our community.” The group is made up of five students in Grade 11 and 12 who serve as different roles in municipal government – mayor, deputy mayor, councillors, and clerk – and are accompanied by the city’s administration and some members of city council during their monthly meetings. “They've been trying to get youth out there so trying to provide more opportunities within the community for our youth to participate in,” explained City Manager Joleen Tuchscherer. “One of the big projects coming up is to bring back the oasis within our community. That’s a hangout really for our youth to be able to have a safe place to be able to come, hang out, try different things and to interact with each other.” Since starting almost a year ago, the youth council has achieved various projects including a holiday shop that encourages residents to buy local merchandise, a “Skate It Forward” initiative, and a mural project – where they received the Painted Hand Community Development Grant of $17,698. “We’re going to work with one of the classes at [Melville Comprehensive School] and the other elementary schools as well, to create five murals for Melville to bring more life to the city,” voiced the mayor of Melville’s Youth Council, Marion Ajiboye. “One of them is going to be a Melville letter block and every part of the community is going to have a section to paint on and then the classes at the schools are going to finish them up. “We’re really grateful to have received the grant, we’re going to put that to great use and bring our community together.” The idea for getting the youth initiative from the ground up came from a city council meeting. “My day job is a high school teacher and I’ve been on council for the past eight years. When we hired our city manager she was eager to start this youth council and it just made sense that I would be the liaison through the council and through the school,” explained councillor Andrew Rondeau. Rondeau shared some of the benefits he has seen from the students who are part of Melville’s Youth Council, and the impact they have had on the community. “It’s been a lot of fun, on a personal level, to see the kids that I interact with on a daily basis that when you put them in a different environment and see what these youth are capable of,” he expressed. “We have so many opportunities for kids to show what they can do athletically, but to show what they can do with their brains is really a fun thing. Also seeing how creative they are and how eager they are to make a difference, and ideas that we as councillors may not have thought of - because they are coming in with a different perspective - has been really rewarding to see as well." With the potential of the group expanding in the new year, the deputy mayor of the youth council said she looks forward to projects to come. “I think it’s important that youth have voices in making decision[s] for the city because we have a different view on things, a more youthful minded point of view,” shared Olivia Mikolas. “We look at recreation and things to do within the city, instead of maybe more on taxes. We look at things for what we want to see more in our own community and what would interest us.”
