The S&P 500 was down less than 0.1% after drifting between small gains and losses. The benchmark index is coming off a three-day winning streak. The Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 6 points, or less than 0.1%, as of 1:52 p.m. Eastern time. The Nasdaq composite was down less than 0.1%. Trading volume was lighter than usual as U.S. markets reopened after the Christmas holiday. Chip company Broadcom rose 2.9%, Micron Technology was up 1% and Adobe gained 0.8%. While tech stocks overall were in the green, some heavyweights were a drag on the market. Semiconductor giant Nvidia, whose enormous valuation gives it an outsize influence on indexes, slipped 0.1%. Meta Platforms fell 0.7%, Amazon was down 0.6%, and Netflix gave up 1.1%. Tesla was among the biggest decliners in the S&P 500, down 1.9%. Health care stocks helped lift the market. CVS Health rose 1.7% and Walgreens Boots Alliance rose 3% for the biggest gain among S&P 500 stocks. Several retailers also gained ground. Target rose 2.8%, Best Buy was up 2.2% and Dollar Tree gained 2.7%. Retailers are hoping for a solid sales this holiday season, and the day after Christmas traditionally ranks among the top 10 biggest shopping days of the year, as consumers go online or rush to stores to cash in gift cards and raid bargain bins. U.S.-listed shares in Honda and Nissan rose 4% and 16%, respectively. The Japanese automakers announced earlier this week that the two companies are in talks to combine. Traders got a labor market update. U.S. applications for unemployment benefits held steady last week , though continuing claims rose to the highest level in three years, the Labor Department reported. Treasury yields turned mostly lower in the bond market. The yield on the 10-year Treasury fell to 4.57% from 4.59% late Tuesday. Major European markets were closed, as well as Hong Kong, Australia, New Zealand and Indonesia. Trading was expected to be subdued this week with a thin slate of economic data on the calendar. Still, U.S. markets have historically gotten a boost at year’s end despite lower trading volumes. The last five trading days of each year, plus the first two in the new year, have brought an average gain of 1.3% since 1950. So far this month, the U.S. stock market has lost some of its gains since President-elect Donald Trump’s win on Election Day, which raised hopes for faster economic growth and more lax regulations that would boost corporate profits. Worries have risen that Trump’s preference for tariffs and other policies could lead to higher inflation , a bigger U.S. government debt and difficulties for global trade. Even so, the U.S. market remains on pace to deliver strong returns for 2024. The benchmark S&P 500 is up roughly 26% so far this year and remains near its most recent all-time high it set earlier this month — its latest of 57 record highs this year. Wall Street has several economic reports to look forward to next week, including updates on pending home sales and home prices, a report on U.S. construction spending and snapshots of manufacturing activity. Many Australians say they dread Christmas parties because of the pressure to drink, with those choosing not to drink feeling judged and excluded for not throwing back beers with their colleagues. or signup to continue reading Research from Indeed found a third of Australians feel there is too much emphasis on alcohol at work Christmas parties, and one in four are afraid of doing something embarrassing due to alcohol. Ruth Limkin, who hasn't been drinking alcohol for several years, said Australians often don't know how to react to those who don't drink. "People are really confused when they offer you something to drink and you ask for something alcohol-free," she said. "That's one of the reasons actually that I often take something because you don't want people to feel uncomfortable." Psychologist at an Australian rehab clinic Gavin Brown said people are more likely to rely on alcohol during the holiday season as they try to navigate workloads and pressures to attend Christmas events. "The social pressure of drinking alcohol can make people feel judged or excluded if they decline to drink, leading to feelings of guilt or inadequacy," he said. "This then trickles into professional life because people believe that they are perceived differently by their co-workers, or even their bosses, for not participating. "For people in recovery from alcohol dependencies, work Christmas parties can be particularly daunting because they almost always centre on behaviour they are working hard to avoid." Researchers from an Australian health group suggested senior workforce commonly use alcohol as a coping mechanism or to increase confidence in social settings. More than one in three Australian managers choose to have a drink at the end of the day with many saying they're more comfortable at social events after a beer, according to the study. Ms Limkin said taking a sober approach means remembering everything the day after. The next day when you're waking up, you're able to fully embrace the day and not worry about whether or not you've got a hangover. "Also means you can eat more actual dessert because you're not drinking your calories." Dr Brown recommended framing Christmas parties around an activity like sport, spa treatments or escape rooms to reduce pressure on alcohol consumption. People are likely to drink less if involved in an activity, he said. Ms Limkin said at social events. "Sometimes I don't even say, I don't drink at all," she said. "I just say I'm not drinking today." For , Ms Limkin recommended taking things one step at a time. "When you get to an event, if someone's like, 'oh, you're not drinking' or 'what can I offer you', I just say I'm gonna start with something alcohol-free," she said. "I actually don't intend to then go on to anything with alcohol, but it just makes people feel more comfortable for whatever reason." His body is at his mother's home in Maraenui, and will be taken to the nearby gang headquarters on Friday, where he will lie for his last night and for poroporoaki (farewell) before a funeral service on Saturday in Marewa. Extra police have been brought in from across the country and a number of roading checkpoints have resulted in two vehicles being seized, four breath tests failed and one arrest for disorder. There have also been a handful of people who've had gang insignia taken off them under new laws banning patches in public . Hawke's Bay area commander Inspector Lincoln Sycamore told RNZ police were expecting a large number of people to attend the tangi. "We know that Benson had a wide reach within the community both from a family perspective and whatever other interests he had... real strong in the rugby fraternity. "We are expecting a large number of people to come pay their respects from whatever walks of live they happen to choose - but certainly, and I'll emphasise, that he was a community member as well as whatever other things he chose to do." Police have brought in extra officers from all over the country, including public order teams and gang disruption units. "Essentially everybody that can wear a blue uniform from within our own capacity is what we've deployed out and about... Our focus is high visibility and to provide that reassurance and to be able to react to anything should we need to. "We think we've got the right sort of capacity to respond to whatever we need to at the time." 'Really gentle, really polite and caring' Police said Benson's death was not being treated as suspicious. and would be referred to the coroner. Locals RNZ spoke to in Maraenui said everyone was in disbelief that Benson was dead. "The whole community is in shock, no one can believe what's happened - they're still coming to terms with it. The community is really pulling together and it's quite sombre, Heil's was a really good guy, he was a really good customer," said one person. Benson was the leader of the Mongrel Mob's Barbarian chapter in Napier, but Maraenui Four Square owner Multitude Parihar remembered him as a customer who loved Kapiti ice cream . "He was really gentle, really polite and really caring. Even his dad was a regular customer. Feeling so sad for them." Parihar said there had been an influx of gang members into Maraenui, but no issues had arisen. "Yeah it's a lot, very busy. Expecting a lot tomorrow and on Saturday." Around the corner at the Mongrel Mob's Napier headquarters, a marquee and food truck had been set up on the lawn and a social media post warned tangi attendees about road closures at Benson's mother's house nearby, urging everyone to behave. A source told RNZ the tangi was expected to be peaceful, and gang members would respect the new laws banning patches in public. One local said the police presence had been over the top. "The community spirit, the family spirit is amazing. Everyone is looking out for each other but they want the police to bugger off and leave them to it." Sycamore said there had been been a variety of interactions at checkpoints. "Anecdotal feedback ranges from, 'Hey it's really great to see police here doing what you're doing,' through to, 'I've been stopped a number of times and I'm over it...' but probably in stronger language than that." Benson's body will be moved down the street to the gang pad on Saturday for a poroporoaki - a farewell - before his funeral service at the Napier Tech Sports Club in Marewa on Saturday. "The public can be assured police are ready to respond to any issues if and when they arise, and will maintain high visibility until funeral commemorations have concluded. "There will be no tolerance for breaches of the law, including the Gangs Act 2024, nor for any unsafe or intimidating behaviour," said Sycamore. But, you might be wondering if they offer anything for people who have gluten sensitivity or intolerance. You're in luck — Jersey Mike's does serve gluten-free rolls (and you can also turn any of their subs into a salad, too). The chain sources its gluten-free subs from Udi's; a gluten-free bakery that takes care to individually package each roll so that there is no risk of cross-contamination during transport. Many of Jersey Mike's fillings are naturally gluten-free including deli meats, cheeses, vegetables, and oil and vinegar dressings. However, there are two filling options that are not gluten-free: The meatball and cheese sub and the chicken parmesan. Meanwhile, when it comes to meal add-ons, the chain offers several gluten-free chip options and even has a gluten-free Snickerdoodle cookie, also from Udi's. (As always, you should use your best judgment when ordering, and be aware that no dining out experience is completely foolproof when you have celiac disease or a severe food intolerance.) How to order a gluten-free sandwich at Jersey Mike's Some Jersey Mike's locations have a gluten-free sandwich-making station where all the ingredients are kept separate from the rest of the stock. However, this is not available at every restaurant. Still, Jersey Mike's makes a big effort to prioritize different dietary needs and train its staff to make gluten-free meals for diners. And if the location that you order from does not have a GF station, instead of , you can build your own sub by going through your needs in person (mobile ordering won't be enough, sadly) with your server. Feel free to watch your sandwich maker closely, as cross-contamination through surfaces or gloves is a possibility, and speak up if something isn't right. For example, if you notice your server reaching for lettuce or tomato that is from the same bin that other employees use, or if they don't change their gloves after each step, including touching the vinegar and oil bottles, you could be at risk of finding trace amounts of gluten in your food.
