We will legislate to guarantee 100,000 free TAFE places nationwide every year. That means more tradies to build more homes. More apprentices getting a start. More carers to look after our loved ones, whether they're just starting out on life's journey or have a respectable bit of mileage on the clock. And it will equip Australians to enhance their own skills and adapt to the economy as it keeps evolving. What a boon this will be for Australia. My government made it a priority to put public TAFE back at the centre of vocational education and training. And our game-changing investment in free TAFE is already delivering results. More than half a million Australians have already enrolled in free courses. Crucially, one in every three places have been taken up by people in regional communities . People are training to become electricians in Belmont. They're training to become nurses in Loganlea. They're training to become early childhood educators in Batchelor, Cairns and Frankston. And, at the new TAFE Centres of Excellence in the Hunter Valley and Western Sydney, they're training for the good jobs that will help Australia manufacture things here at home again. We've had 35,000 enrol in construction courses, 35,000 in early education, 50,000 in digital technology, and 130,000 in aged care and disability care. Tens of thousands of jobseekers are getting a fresh start. Hundreds of thousands of young people are training for a new career, and older workers are training for a new opportunity. These are not just numbers. Each one is a story of individuals and families. A story about the joy of achievement, and the satisfaction and reward of meaningful work. And it's a story about stronger, happier communities and a healthier, more diverse economy. Our investment sends a clear message to each and every person enrolled: we back you. We support your education. We support your aspiration. And we want you to get that qualification to help build the life you want. The positive, life-changing consequences of free TAFE are such a no-brainer that it takes an ideology without heart to oppose it. Yet that is exactly what the Coalition parties have revealed about themselves through their snobbery and sneering at TAFE. Deputy Liberal Leader Sussan Ley said the quiet part out loud in Parliament this week when she said this: "It's a key principle and tenet of the Liberal Party: if you don't pay for something, you don't value it." What an extraordinarily out-of-touch thing to say. They believe nothing in life can possibly be of any value unless you've got a receipt for it. Tells you everything you need to know about what a profound and disturbing threat the Coalition are to proudly Australian achievements like Medicare and public education. They don't back TAFE. They never will. The truth is that no matter how high TAFE helps you climb in life, and no matter what opportunities you get to build a future for yourself and your loved ones, the Liberals and Nationals will look down on the very education that gave you a boost to get there. Fresh daily!* Policy against prosecuting sitting presidents cited * Courts must approve the two dismissal requests WASHINGTON: US prosecutors moved on Monday to drop the two federal criminal cases against Donald Trump involving his efforts to overturn his 2020 election defeat and his handling of classified documents, citing Justice Department policy against prosecuting a sitting president. The steps by prosecutors working with Special Counsel Jack Smith in the two cases represent a big legal victory for the Republican president-elect, who won the Nov. 5 US election and is set to return to office on Jan. 20. The Justice Department policy that the prosecutors cited dates back to the 1970s. It holds that a criminal prosecution of a sitting president would violate the US Constitution by undermining the ability of the country’s chief executive to function. Courts will still have to approve both requests from prosecutors. The prosecutors in a filing in the election subversion case said the department’s policy requires the case to be dismissed before Trump returns to the White House. “This outcome is not based on the merits or strength of the case against the defendant,” prosecutors wrote in the filing. Smith’s office similarly moved to end its attempt to revive the case accusing Trump of illegally retaining classified documents when he left office in 2021 after his first term as president. But the prosecutors signaled they will still ask a federal appeals court to bring back the case against two Trump associates who had been accused of obstructing that investigation. Trump spokesman Steven Cheung hailed what he called “a major victory for the rule of law.” Trump had faced criminal charges in four cases — the two brought by Smith and two in state courts in New York and Georgia. He was convicted in the New York case while the Georgia case is in limbo. In a post on social media, Trump railed on Monday against the legal cases as a “low point in the History of our Country.” The moves by Smith, who was appointed in 2022 by US Attorney General Merrick Garland, represents a remarkable shift from the special prosecutor who obtained indictments against Trump in two separate cases accusing him of crimes that threatened US election integrity and national security. Prosecutors acknowledged that the election of a president who faced ongoing criminal cases created an unprecedented predicament for the Justice Department. It shows how Trump’s election victory over Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris was not just a political triumph, but also a legal one. Trump pleaded not guilty in August 2023 to four federal charges accusing him of conspiring to obstruct the collection and certification of votes following his 2020 loss to Democrat Joe Biden. Trump, who as president will again oversee the Justice Department, was expected to order an end to the federal 2020 election case and to Smith’s appeal in the documents case. Florida-based Judge Aileen Cannon, who Trump appointed to the federal bench, had dismissed the classified documents case in July, ruling that Smith was improperly appointed to his role as special counsel. Smith’s office had been appealing that ruling and indicated on Monday that the appeal would continue as it relates to Trump personal aide Walt Nauta and Carlos De Oliveira, a manager at his Mar-a-Lago resort, who had been previously charged alongside Trump in the case. Both Nauta and De Oliveria have pleaded not guilty, as did Trump. In the 2020 election case, Trump’s lawyers had previously said they would seek to dismiss the charges based on a US Supreme Court ruling in July that former presidents have broad immunity from prosecution over official actions taken while in the White House. Smith attempted to salvage the case following that ruling, dropping some allegations but arguing that the rest were not covered by presidential immunity and could proceed to trial. Judge Tanya Chutkan had been due to decide whether the immunity decision required other portions of the case to be thrown out. A trial date originally set for March 2024 had not been rescheduled. The case was brought following an investigation led by Smith into Trump’s attempts to retain power following his 2020 election defeat, culminating in the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the US Capitol by a mob of his supporters following his inflammatory speech near the White House. Trump denied wrongdoing and argued that the US legal system had been turned against him to damage his presidential campaign. He vowed during the campaign that he would fire Smith if he returned to the presidency. Trump in May became the first former president to be convicted of a crime when a jury in New York found him guilty of felony charges relating to hush money paid to a porn star before the 2016 election. His sentencing in that case has been indefinitely postponed. The criminal case against Trump in Georgia state court involving the 2020 election is stalled.

South Carolina's program win streak was abruptly put to an end by UCLA, just weeks after Dawn Staley made her feelings clear on the Gamecocks having a target on their backs. In South Carolina's 77-62 loss to UCLA at Pauley Pavilion, the Bruins seemingly frustrated the Gamecocks' offense at every turn, with the visitors struggling to get anything going. Because of the difficulty of shots, South Carolina found itself down 43-22 at halftime, showing just how much UCLA had clamped down the reigning national champions. The second half was no different, with Cori Close's squad continuing to put the pressure on Staley's undefeated team. In the end, the Bruins' game plan worked, snapping the Gamecocks' win streak at 43 straight, just days after South Carolina's 77-45 win over its rival Clemson. "It means our players make a commitment to the team, they make a commitment to us (coaches), they make a commitment to each other and when you do it that way, you have this type of historical moment that you appreciate." Staley also made it a point to put these accomplishments into context during a long basketball season. "We're in the middle of the season and we go on the road and play one of the biggest games of our season in a few days," the legendary head coach continued. "Twenty-four hour rule. We'll enjoy it, then we've got to move on." In all, South Carolina's loss proved Staley was right in stating that the Gamecocks were going to face the best of every team this season. After South Carolina escaped with a win against Michigan in Las Vegas, Staley appreciated seeing the Wolverines putting their best foot forward against them. “It’s a really young season, and we’re going to get everybody’s best all the time – we’re fortunate to do it," she said at the time . "I welcome everybody’s best because, if you’re the target, you’ve had some success. And we’re not going to shy away from, obviously, having that target on our back." She continued: "I like that we've been challenged. I like the fact that we’ve been exposed in certain areas because, when you’re teaching a team like this, and we play against our Highlighters, it’s not just because we’re playing against guys – we were exposed against young women who were determined to play, and they made an impact like as a collective unit."
