casino games gambling Buying a house in 2025: your how-to guideGoogle is criticizing what it called a “radical” proposal to remedy government antitrust claims. The tech giant made the argument in a blog post Thursday (Nov. 21), one day after the U.S. Department of Justice called for Google to divest its Chrome browser to answer a ruling that the company has a search market monopoly. “DOJ had a chance to propose remedies related to the issue in this case: search distribution agreements with Apple , Mozilla , smartphone OEMs and wireless carriers,” the post said. “Instead, DOJ chose to push a radical interventionist agenda that would harm Americans and America’s global technology leadership. DOJ’s wildly overbroad proposal goes miles beyond the court’s decision. It would break a range of Google products — even beyond Search — that people love and find helpful in their everyday lives.” In a court filing Wednesday (Nov. 20), the government said forcing Google to sell Chrome would make for a more equitable search engine market. Selling, the filing said, “will permanently stop Google’s control of this critical search access point and allow rival search engines the ability to access the browser that for many users is a gateway to the internet.” Google argued in the blog post that the proposal would undermine the quality of its products and bring about “government micromanagement of Google Search” by appointing a “Technical Committee.” “As just one example, DOJ’s proposal would literally require us to install not one but two separate choice screens before you could access Google Search on a Pixel phone you bought,” the post said. “And the design of those choice screens would have to be approved by the Technical Committee. And that’s just a small part of it. We wish we were making this up.” A federal court ruled in August that Google has a monopoly on the search market, following a 2020 antitrust suit by the DOJ. The department said in October it was weighing a breakup of Google’s businesses that could include splitting off its Chrome, Play or Android units. In an Oct. 8 court filing , the DOJ floated limits to default agreements and “other revenue-sharing arrangements related to search and search-related products,” which would cover Google’s multibillion-dollar search arrangements with Apple and Samsung .

From their initial public offering in November 2015 to their all-time high in August 2021, shares of Block ( SQ -0.26% ) have skyrocketed an impressive 2,060%. That gain easily trounced the broader indexes. Since then, the market has adopted a more subdued perspective on this fintech stock , as well as other once high-flying growth enterprises. As a result, shares trade 68% off that peak from more than three years ago. You might be considering buying Block on the dip. Could this move set you up for life? Block still has growth potential Block registered tremendous growth over the years by attacking large end markets. For example, the leadership team estimates the total addressable market for Cash App to be $75 billion, while for Square it believes it's $130 billion (both on a gross profit basis). Given that Block generated an annualized gross profit of $9 billion in the third quarter (ended Sept. 30), there is a huge expansionary runway to target. A key part of the strategy has been to introduce new features to customers. Recently, Square started offering AI tools to help merchants quickly upload data and onboard. For Cash App, the plan is to integrate buy now, pay later service Afterpay directly to Cash App debit cards. It's all about finding ways to boost user engagement, which can lead to more revenue and gross profit for Block. Further tapping foreign markets also adds upside. During the latest quarter, just 18% of the Square segment's gross payment volume came from outside the U.S., leaving plenty of room to diversify geographic reach. Block is getting financially fit Throughout its history, Block's main goal has been to grow as quickly as possible, by creating new products and services and marketing to attract new customers. The market seems to always love a good growth story. However, Block is adopting a different approach nowadays, something shareholders should appreciate. The business is trying to control costs and drive greater operational efficiencies. One way it has done this is by capping its employee headcount at 12,000 people. The result is better bottom-line performance. After generating $351 million of adjusted operating income in 2023, management now expects to report almost $1.6 billion for this year, translating to a monster 344% year-over-year jump. "We've driven performance in 2024 by focusing our strategies and by operating with expense discipline across personnel, structural costs, and corporate overhead costs," CFO Amrita Ahuja said on the Q3 2024 earnings call . When they start to reach scale, software and payments enterprises should be able to produce outsize profits. This trend is starting to come alive with Block. The hope, of course, is that the company can keep growing its earnings base, while at the same time achieving robust top-line growth. Investor outlook for Block Block has certainly made a name for itself in the financial services industry, with a relentless focus on catering to both merchants and consumers. It continues to see strong growth prospects. And the management team has made it a priority to achieve better profitability. This is exactly what shareholders want to see from the businesses that they own. But can Block set investors up for life? In my view, setting investors up for life means that a stock can put up outsize investment gains for a very long time. That's a very hard outcome to predict with any level of certainty ahead of time, as it requires foresight about what the economy and new technologies will look like decades from now. This seems like an impossible task. Even without the ability to know if a stock can set you up for life, Block still looks like a smart investment to make. Shares trade at a current price-to-sales ratio that represents a sizable 57% discount to their historical average. Long-term investors should take advantage of this buying opportunity.SAN DIEGO , Dec. 15, 2024 /PRNewswire/ -- Robbins Geller Rudman & Dowd LLP announces that purchasers or acquirers of ASML Holding N.V. (NASDAQ: ASML) ordinary shares between January 24, 2024 and October 15, 2024 , all dates inclusive (the "Class Period"), have until Monday, January 13, 2025 to seek appointment as lead plaintiff of the ASML class action lawsuit. Captioned City of Hollywood Firefighters' Pension Fund v. ASML Holding N.V. , No. 24-cv-08664 (S.D.N.Y.), the ASML class action lawsuit charges ASML as well as certain of ASML's top current and former executives with violations of the Securities Exchange Act of 1934. CASE ALLEGATIONS : ASML develops, produces, markets, sells, and services advanced semiconductor equipment systems for chipmakers. The ASML class action lawsuit alleges that defendants throughout the Class Period made false and/or misleading statements and/or failed to disclose that: (i) the issues being faced by suppliers, like ASML, in the semiconductor industry were much more severe than defendants had indicated to investors; (ii) the pace of recovery of sales in the semiconductor industry was much slower than defendants had publicly acknowledged; and (iii) defendants had created the false impression that they possessed reliable information pertaining to customer demand and anticipated growth, while also downplaying risk from macroeconomic and industry fluctuations, as well as stronger regulations restricting the export of semiconductor technology, including the products that ASML sells. The ASML class action lawsuit further alleges that on October 15, 2024 , ASML announced that it: (i) recorded quarterly booking of only €2.63 billion – a 53% decline from €5.6 billion in the second quarter of 2024; (ii) expected full year 2025 net sales to be between €30 billion and €35 billion, in the lower half of ASML's initial range of between €30 billion and €40 billion; and (iii) materially reduced its gross margin target to between 51% and 53%, down from its prior guidance of between 54% and 56%. On this news, the price of ASML stock fell more than 16%, according to the complaint. Then, on October 16, 2024 , during the accompanying earnings call, the ASML class action lawsuit alleges that ASML's CFO, defendant Roger Dassen , attributed the poor bookings results to "a reflection of the slow recovery in the traditional [semiconductor] end markets as customers remain cautious in the current environment." Additionally, ASML's CEO, defendant Christophe Fouquet , admitted that the semiconductor industry "recovery will extend well into 2025," leading to "a reduced growth curve in 2025 and an . . . overall reduction of our lithography demand," according to the complaint. The ASML class action lawsuit alleges that on this news, the price of ASML stock fell more than 6%. THE LEAD PLAINTIFF PROCESS : The Private Securities Litigation Reform Act of 1995 permits any investor who purchased or acquired ASML ordinary shares during the Class Period to seek appointment as lead plaintiff in the ASML class action lawsuit. WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — It wasn’t how Duke drew up the final play, but it worked out perfect for the Blue Devils in Saturday’s 23-17 victory over Wake Forest. Maalik Murphy threw a 39-yard touchdown pass to Jordan Moore as time expired, allowing Duke to end the regular season with three consecutive victories. Murphy said he realized he took too long to make a decision after the last snap. “I knew at that point I had to make a play,” he said. “The damage was already done, time was ticking.” With the score tied at 17, the Blue Devils (9-3, 5-3 Atlantic Coast Conference) moved 76 yards in 1:22 after forcing a Wake Forest punt. It appeared that Duke might run out of time in the slow-developing play, but Moore improvised and broke free along the right side, caught the ball at the 10-yard line and spun into the end zone to complete a comeback from 14 points down in the second half. “The play that Maalik and Jordan put together was magical,” Duke coach Manny Diaz said. “Nobody thought a 5-yard route would turn into a (long) touchdown.” So instead of a long field-goal attempt, Duke had something better. “I just decided to take it down the field,” Moore said. “I think that’s a testament to our chemistry. ... Maalik had the confidence in himself to make that kind of play.” It resulted in Duke’s sixth victory by seven points or less. “It’s like a perfect exclamation point to our season,” Diaz said. “An unbelievable way to finish our season.” Murphy racked up with 235 yards on 26-for-34 passing. Moore, who was down with an injury after a reception earlier in the second half, made five catches for 98 yards. Hank Bachmeier threw for 207 yards and a touchdown as Wake Forest (4-8, 2-6) ended its second straight four-win season with a four-game losing streak. “A heartbreaking loss,” Demon Deacons coach Dave Clawson said. “It’s a tough way to lose a game and a tough way to end the season.” Tate Carey’s 8-yard run, Matthew Dennis’ 37-yard field goal and Horatio Fields’ 9-yard reception across 11 minutes of game time gave Wake Forest a 17-3 lead with nine minutes left in the third quarter. Duke took advantage of a short field following a punt, moving 42 yards in four plays to score on Star Thomas’ 3-yard run. The Blue Devils recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff and converted on Murphy’s 2-yard run with 12:57 left to pull even. “What has been proven is that we’re mentally tough,” Diaz said. “We’re not going to do everything perfect.” Taylor Morin became Wake Forest’s all-time leader in receiving yards with 2,974. He picked up 47 yards on eight catches on Saturday. Morin, in his fifth season, passed former NFL player Ricky Proehl, who had 2,929 yards in the late 1980s. Duke: The Blue Devils have secured at least a nine-win season for the second time in three seasons, this one coming in Diaz’s first season. They racked up a 4-0 record against in-state opponents, including comebacks to top North Carolina and Wake Forest. “Every quest that we have for championships starts in our own state,” Diaz said. Wake Forest: The Demon Deacons punted on their final three possessions of the season. They finished with a 1-6 record in home games. “It’s been a tough year, a long year, and I’m proud of our team and how hard they fought,” Clawson said. After the Wolverines' fourth straight win in the series, players converged at the block "O" to plant its flag. The Ohio State players were in the south end zone singing their alma mater in front of the student section. When the Buckeyes saw the Wolverines' flag, they rushed toward the 50-yard line. Social media posts showed Michigan offensive lineman Raheem Anderson carrying the flag on a long pole to midfield, where the Wolverines were met by dozens of Ohio State players and fights broke out. Buckeyes defensive end Jack Sawyer was seen ripping the flag off the pole and taking the flag as he scuffled with several people trying to recover the flag. A statement from the Ohio State Police Department read: "Following the game, officers from multiple law enforcement agencies assisted in breaking up an on-field altercation. During the scuffle, multiple officers representing Ohio and Michigan deployed pepper spray. OSUPD is the lead agency for games and will continue to investigate." Michigan running back Kalel Mullings on FOX said: "For such a great game, you hate to see stuff like that after the game. It's bad for the sport, bad for college football. At the end of the day, some people got to learn how to lose, man. "You can't be fighting and stuff just because you lost the game. We had 60 minutes and four quarters to do all that fighting. Now people want to talk and fight. That's wrong. It's bad for the game. Classless, in my opinion. People got to be better." Once order was restored, officers cordoned the 50-yard line, using bicycles as barriers. Ohio State coach Ryan Day in his postgame press conference said he wasn't sure what happened. "I don't know all the details of it. But I know that these guys are looking to put a flag on our field and our guys weren't going to let that happen," he said. "I'll find out exactly what happened, but this is our field and certainly we're embarrassed at the fact we lost the game, but there's some prideful guys on our team that weren't just going to let that happen." The Big Ten has not yet released a statement on the incident. --Field Level MediaStay protected from SEO poisoning, a cyber threat exploiting search engine rankings to spread malware and phishing scams. Learn risks, real-world examples, and preventive measures for safer browsing. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Did you know that over 80% (PDF) of cyberattacks exploit online platforms, including search engines? These indispensable tools guide billions of users to the content they seek, but their trustworthiness can be weaponized. Cybercriminals are exploiting search engine optimization (SEO) techniques to distribute malware, launch phishing attacks, and spread harmful content. This practice, known as SEO poisoning , manipulates search results to lure unsuspecting users into clicking on malicious links. Recent reports indicate a significant rise in SEO poisoning attacks. Between August 2023 and January 2024, there was a 60% increase in malware detections stemming from malicious search results. Such trends highlight the growing sophistication of these tactics and the critical need for vigilance among businesses and individuals alike. What is SEO Poisoning? SEO poisoning is a malicious strategy where cybercriminals manipulate search engine algorithms to rank harmful websites prominently in search results. These websites often contain malware, phishing schemes, or scams designed to steal sensitive information. Attackers capitalize on high-demand keywords tied to trending topics or urgent events, such as natural disasters, major product launches, or public health crises. By employing techniques like keyword stuffing, spammy backlinks, and deceptive content, they make their sites appear legitimate and lure unsuspecting users. Key Risks of SEO Poisoning: Malware Distribution: Clicking on infected links can install ransomware, spyware, or other malware. Phishing Scams: Users are tricked into providing sensitive data like passwords or credit card information. Reputation Damage: Legitimate businesses can lose credibility if associated with malicious links. One example is the surge of Gootloader malware in early 2023. Attackers targeted niche search terms, such as “implied employment agreement,” to redirect users to infected websites. These attacks emphasize how even low-competition search terms can become cybercriminals’ playgrounds. Real-World Examples of SEO Manipulation SEO manipulation has been used in several high-profile attacks, exploiting the trust users place in search results: Fake Antivirus Software: Users searching for free antivirus tools were directed to malicious sites posing as trusted providers. These fake programs encrypted files and demanded ransom payments, exploiting users’ trust in well-known antivirus brands like Avast, Bitdefender and Malwarebytes . Fake antivirus websites have been known to impersonate popular security providers to deceive users . Holiday Shopping Scams: During peak shopping seasons, cybercriminals created fake e-commerce sites targeting popular products. These fraudulent sites were designed to rank high in search results, allowing attackers to trick users into entering their payment information, which the criminals then stole. Software Search Exploitation: In 2023, searches for popular tools like Blender 3D led users to fraudulent sites offering infected downloads. Such campaigns highlight the dangers of SEO poisoning when targeting trusted software. These examples show how attackers exploit trust in search results and highlight the importance of vigilance, particularly during periods of heightened online activity. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Protecting Against SEO-Based Threats Although SEO poisoning is a persistent threat, proactive measures can help both businesses and individual users reduce the risks. For Businesses Businesses must safeguard their websites and digital presence from exploitation. Trusted SEO providers can optimize websites while identifying and mitigating vulnerabilities, such as fake backlinks or unauthorized content changes, often exploited in SEO poisoning campaigns. According to Stellar SEO , a custom SEO services provider, exploiting SEO-related vulnerabilities has even been adopted by top-tier groups such as the Chinese DragonRank, which was recently discovered manipulating search engines to redirect users to malicious websites. For Users Users can protect themselves by adopting proactive online habits: Verify the Source: Always inspect URLs carefully before clicking, especially when searching for trending or high-demand topics. Use Trusted Security Tools: Antivirus software and browser extensions can help identify and block harmful sites. For example, providers like Kaspersky have shown how cybercriminals exploit marketing strategies to launch attacks . Stay Informed: Awareness of the latest cybersecurity trends is crucial for recognizing and avoiding malicious tactics. By combining secure SEO strategies with vigilance, businesses and users can significantly reduce their exposure to SEO poisoning threats. How Search Engines Are Combating SEO Poisoning Search engines like Google and Bing constantly update their algorithms to detect and penalize malicious websites. These updates target behaviors such as keyword stuffing, suspicious backlinking patterns, and misleading content. Key Defensive Measures Include: Machine Learning Algorithms: These tools analyze billions of web pages for signs of malicious intent. Safe Browsing Technology: Platforms like Google warn users about harmful websites before they can be accessed. Domain Reputation Systems: Search engines evaluate the trustworthiness of domains to demote those linked to malicious activity. Despite these efforts, cybercriminals continue to evolve their techniques, creating sophisticated tactics to bypass detection. For instance, in November 2024, attackers exploited niche search queries like “ Are Bengal cats legal in Australia “ to lure users to malicious websites. Such incidents underscore the importance of proactive measures by users and businesses to complement automated systems. Recognizing and avoiding malicious links remains a shared responsibility. (adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({}); Conclusion SEO poisoning is a growing threat at the intersection of cybersecurity and digital marketing. By exploiting legitimate SEO techniques, cybercriminals deceive users, distribute malware, and undermine trust in search engines. For businesses, partnering with trusted providers of custom SEO services ensures websites are optimized securely, preventing vulnerabilities that attackers might exploit. For users, adopting habits like verifying sources, using reliable security tools, and staying informed about emerging threats is essential for staying safe online. Every time you search online, consider the risks that lurk behind seemingly trustworthy links. By remaining vigilant and proactive, we can protect our digital spaces and maintain trust in the tools that shape our online world.
